Successful CHIO for Hennie Roffel: 'The spectators even had Gentleman Jack TKJ at number one!'

At the last minute, Hennie Roffel was informed that she would be riding yesterday at the prestigious CHIO Rotterdam with the stallions of Ted Kop Jansen, Gentleman Jack TKJ (Hessel 480 x Michiel 442) and Rémy Martin TKJ (Alwin 469 x Fetse 349). With Gentleman Jack TKJ, she competed in the national Small Tour (Prix St. Georges); Rémy Martin TKJ's Grand Prix debut was scheduled.

It was a dream for both Hennie Roffel and Ted Kop Jansen to ride in the Kralingse Bos. "And it went wonderfully!" said an enthusiastic rider. "With Gentleman Jack TKJ, I took advantage of the opportunity to scout the course. He tends to get tense in unfamiliar surroundings, and the audience sits very close to the 'small' Dura Vermeer arena, among the trees."

70+ score from the audience

The Hessel 480 son stayed close to his rider throughout the test and showed no signs of being spooked. Hennie: 'We made no mistakes; we peaked at the right moment.' The score of 68.039% was excellent; the three judges were completely in agreement. 'I was very happy with this percentage, but even better was that we scored higher than 70% in the spectator judging—a first place! That means the audience appreciated the test and enjoyed the beautiful spectacle.'

Grand Prix debut for Rémy Martin TKJ

The Grand Prix was ridden in the afternoon; the moment Rémy Martin TKJ made his debut at the very highest level. 'I am super satisfied with him too,' is Hennie's comment. 'Super happy with this debut, because riding all the lines in this test together is still quite a challenge for us. We made a few beginner mistakes, unfortunately also on the double-counting zigzag. Rémy was startled by something that happened in the stands, which meant I couldn't start the exercise nicely; then you're playing catch-up the whole line. On the last line, he thought he had to halt – after all, that is also the case in the Inter II… – and he still had to do a piaffe. I wasn't prepared for that.'

Promising result

The score of 63.297% can be called promising. 'Now we need to grow together at this level,' says the rider from Tijnje. And that is exactly what the ambitious rider plans to do: continue working from here, iron out the mistakes, and gain routine. 'After this competition, we will first work on the basics again, then we will pick up the individual test components a bit, and then continue working at a steady pace. I am super proud of the horses; they showed themselves well!'

Op het laatste moment kreeg Hennie Roffel te horen dat ze gisteren op het prestigieuze CHIO Rotterdam mocht rijden met de hengsten van Ted Kop Jansen, Gentleman Jack TKJ (Hessel 480 x Michiel 442) en Rémy Martin TKJ (Alwin 469 x Fetse 349). Met Gentleman Jack TKJ startte ze in de nationale Lichte Tour (Prix St. Georges); voor Rémy Martin TKJ stond hun Grand Prix-debuut gepland.

Het was een droom voor zowel Hennie Roffel als Ted Kop Jansen om eens in het Kralingse Bos te mogen rijden. ‘En het ging superfijn!’, aldus een enthousiaste amazone. ‘Met Gentleman Jack TKJ had ik gebruik gemaakt van de mogelijkheid om de baan te mogen verkennen. Hij wil nog wel eens gespannen worden in een vreemde omgeving, en het publiek zit heel dicht op de ‘kleine’ Dura Vermeer-baan, tussen de bomen.’

70+ score van het publiek

De Hessel 480-zoon bleef gedurende de proef mooi bij zijn amazone en had geen last van kijkerigheid. Hennie: ‘We hadden geen fouten; we hebben gepiekt op het juiste moment.’ De score van 68.039% was een hele mooie, de drie juryleden zaten goed op één lijn. ‘Ik was heel blij met dit percentage nog mooier was het dat we in de spectator judging zelfs hoger dan 70% hadden, een eerste plek! Dat betekent dat het publiek de proef op prijs stelde en heeft genoten van het mooie beeld.’

Grand Prix-debuut voor Rémy Martin TKJ

’s Middags werd de Grand Prix gereden; het moment waarop Rémy Martin TKJ zijn debuut maakte op het allerhoogste niveau. ‘Ook over hem ben ik super tevreden’, luidt Hennie’s commentaar. ‘Superblij met dit debuut, want om alle lijnen in deze proef aan elkaar te rijden, is nog wel een uitdaging voor ons. We hadden wat beginnersfoutjes, helaas ook op de dubbel tellende zig-zag. Rémy schrok van iets dat op de tribune gebeurde waardoor ik de oefening niet mooi kon inzetten; dan loop je die hele lijn achter de feiten aan. Op de laatste lijn dacht hij dat hij moest halthouden – dat is immers ook zo in de Inter II … – en hij moest nog een piaffe doen. Daar was ik niet op bedacht.’

Veelbelovend resultaat

De score van 63.297% mag veelbelovend genoemd worden. ‘Nu moeten we samen groeien op dit niveau’, aldus de amazone uit Tijnje. En dat is ook wat de ambitieuze amazone van plan is: vanaf hier doorwerken, de foutjes wegpoetsen, routine opdoen. ‘Na deze wedstrijd werken we eerst weer aan de basis, daarna pakken we de proefonderdelen afzonderlijk wat op en dan rustig aan verder werken. Ik ben supertrots op de paarden; ze hebben zich goed laten zien!’
